Originally designed by famed architects Daniel Burnham and John Root in 1888 and later enhanced by Frank Lloyd Wright, this landmark venue boasts a breathtaking indoor space that blends historic grandeur with romantic sophistication — perfect for couples who want a celebration that feels both iconic and intimate.

✨Exclusive Caterer

Jewell Events Catering is the exclusive catering partner at The Rookery, which means couples benefit from a seamless, elevated experience from start to finish. Their team knows the venue inside and out — from ideal floor plan flow to timing transitions between ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. Jewell is known for refined presentation, thoughtful menu customization, and polished service that complements the grandeur of the Light Court. Having an exclusive caterer who is deeply familiar with the space ensures smooth coordination and a dining experience that matches the sophistication of the setting.

✨ Ceremony Space

The Light Court serves as the heart of weddings at The Rookery. This two story atrium is flooded with natural light from an overhead glass ceiling, creating a bright and airy atmosphere for indoor ceremonies. Intricate ironwork, carved marble, and gold detailing frame the space beautifully. The sweeping staircases add drama and elegance, making grand entrances and recessional moments unforgettable.

The architecture itself becomes the decor, which allows couples to keep floral design minimal or lean into lush installations without overwhelming the space.

🍸 Cocktail Hour

Following the ceremony, guests typically move to the mezzanine and balcony levels for cocktail hour. From above, they can overlook the Light Court while it is transformed from ceremony layout to reception setting. This creates a seamless flow for the evening and keeps guests engaged in the experience.

The upper levels provide an intimate setting for mingling, signature cocktails, and passed hors d’oeuvres while showcasing the building’s historic details from a different perspective.

🪩 Reception & Dinner

Once guests return to the Light Court, the space is fully reimagined for dinner and dancing. Long banquet tables, classic rounds, or a mix of both work beautifully within the room’s symmetry. The soaring ceiling and architectural details give the reception a dramatic yet refined feel.

The venue easily supports a full dance floor and live band or DJ, and the marble and gold backdrop makes first dances and toasts feel especially cinematic.

👥 Guest Capacity

The Rookery comfortably accommodates
• Around 170 guests for a seated dinner with band and dance floor
• Up to 200 guests for a seated dinner without a large band setup
• Up to 400 guests for a cocktail style reception

These capacities make The Rookery well-suited for couples seeking an elegant, mid-to-larger celebration right in the heart of downtown Chicago’s Loop.

Steeped in architectural history and timeless elegance, The Rookery Building is one of Chicago’s most striking and unforgettable wedding venues.

A FEW OF my MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SHOOTING WEDDINGS AT The Rookery

FAQ

Getting ready locations at The ROOKERY //

Couples getting married at The Rookery have excellent nearby options for getting ready, all within just a few minutes’ walk in the Loop.

The LaSalle Chicago, Autograph Collection is directly across the street, making it one of the most convenient choices. Its modern, upscale suites offer beautiful natural light and plenty of space for bridal party preparations.

Just a short walk away, JW Marriott Chicago provides a more classic, grand hotel feel with spacious rooms and elegant interiors — ideal for larger wedding parties needing room to spread out.

Both hotels offer seamless proximity to The Rookery, allowing for an easy, stress-free transition from getting ready to ceremony while keeping your timeline efficient and relaxed.

what time SHOULD WE BEGIN OUR CEREMONY at The Rookery? //

Your in-house coordinator will be the best person to confirm what works logistically for the space, but from a photography perspective, I love seeing ceremonies start anytime after 4:00 PM. By then, the sun has shifted to the west side of the building, which creates soft, even lighting in the Light Court. It’s incredibly flattering and sets you up beautifully for a seamless transition into cocktail hour and an evening reception with the perfect flow.

where do you RECOMMEND TAKING OUR FAMILY PORTRAITS? //

The options are endless! Based on the conditions of the day, I choose from outside in front of the Board of Trade, the pillars that line LaSalle Street, or inside the Light Court on the grand staircase are all excellent options.

SHOULD we do a FIRST LOOK? //

A first look is a very personal choice. I like to explain the options to each of my couples about the benefits of completing a first look and all of the portraits prior to the ceremony...But I also love a good teary eyed moment as the groom sees his bride walk down the aisle.
As I work with you on your custom timeline, let's chat about the logistics of this!

can we take NIGHT PHOTOS? //

Taking night photos on LaSalle Street in front of the Chicago Board of Trade Building is one of the most iconic ways to end a Chicago wedding day.

At night, the street transforms. The historic architecture glows, the city lights create depth and drama, and the symmetry of LaSalle gives you that cinematic, editorial look you simply can’t replicate anywhere else. The towering columns and illuminated façade behind you feel powerful and timeless, very “classic Chicago.”

It’s especially stunning after a reception at The Rookery because you’re already just steps away. We can slip out for 10 minutes, capture something bold and unforgettable, and be right back to the dance floor.

I have had the honor of photographing countless weddings at The Rookery over the past 12 years. I love discovering fresh, creative ways to photograph couples within this architectural masterpiece, while also returning to the classic vantage points and hidden corners that never fail to deliver a breathtaking backdrop, from the grand Oriel staircase to the luminous Light Court.

Every wedding here feels distinct. The way the natural light filters through the glass ceiling and shifts across the marble and ironwork throughout the day is never quite the same twice. No two celebrations look alike, yet each one carries that same sense of awe you feel the moment you step inside this iconic Chicago landmark.

I would love to connect and share more about my experience working alongside the incredible team at Jewell Events Catering, and how together we create a seamless experience and stunning, timeless images for your wedding day.
